Spoilt for choice? You will be at Zell Am See. With two great championship courses to choose from, the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn, you will once again be scratching your head and wondering why you haven’t had ‘Golf in Austria’ in your diary for years!
The courses have a more American feel than some of their local counterparts, with superb use of lakes, huge bunkers and craftily positioned trees, but a swift glance above the tree-line in any direction and the majesty of the mountains imbues the senses with the spirit of Austria!
Don’t let the seemingly open fairways fool you. The rewards for a well directed drive will become all too apparent when faced with a blind approach over trees and water to a narrow green. Water is an ever present feature of this magnificent course and it’s not just the lakes. Like a bad memory of St. Andrews you’ll be playing great golf if you don’t end up in a ‘burn’ or two on the inward nine. The greens are faultless and any round from June onwards will give you a taste of how the pro’s have to putt on the US Tour. Sometimes you’ll wish you had a snooker cue!
STC Golf Team’s verdict:
“There is never a dull moment at Zell am See. While some of the tees will let you off with a wee slice or hook, the abundance of water round the greens will demand your most accurate approaches.”
